Why You Should Always Try to Avoid a Truck’s Blind Spots

Why You Should Always Try to Avoid a Truck's Blind SpotsIt is not always possible to avoid the blind spots of a semitruck. There are times where you may enter a truck’s blind spot for a short time.

Though this is sometimes unavoidable, you should always be aware of where a truck’s blind spots are located and spend as little time in them as possible.

The trucking industry in Texas is massive, and because of the industrial and commercial makeup of the state, it will continue to grow significantly.

That is why all Texas motorists should know how to safely share the road with semitrucks, and knowing where the blind spots are, is an important first step.

WHAT ARE BLIND SPOTS?

The blind spots on a semitruck are the areas around the truck where vision is either absent or restricted. This includes areas in front, behind and on both sides of the truck.

If you occupy one of these areas while driving, the driver of the truck will not be able to see your vehicle and it may result in a collision between you and the semi-truck which could lead to serious injury or death.

WHERE ARE A TRUCK’S BLIND SPOTS LOCATED?

  • In front: Because the cab of a truck sits so high above the road, you should always avoid an area measuring 20 car lengths in the front of the truck.
  • Behind: Never tailgate a semitruck. When following a truck, you should be able to see the side mirrors. The driver does not have a rear-view mirror so the side mirror is the only way they will be able to know where you are located.
  • On the right side: The right side of the truck is the largest blind spot. If you are on a multi-lane highway, never drive alongside a truck on its right side. They may switch lanes and never know you were there.
  • On the left side: The left-side blind spot is half the size of the right side. It is located directly behind the cab of the truck. When passing a semi on the left side, make sure you have enough speed to clear this blind spot within a few seconds. Do not linger.

Traffic accidents involving semitrucks happen across the state of Texas regularly. If you are ever in a truck accident, protect yourself legally and get the compensation you deserve.
